We evacuated four days earlier. As the water rose around us and the power failed at our temporary home, we decided to take our chance and return to New Orleans. We drove up to the house, not sure what to expect. The very beautiful, very old live oak tree in front of our house was leaning a bit more (luckily AWAY from the house). We were in two cars, me with the kids and my husband with the dog. I can only imagine he breathed a sigh of relief when we saw no visible signs of damage.
You see, our home is close to the 17th Street Canal, the one that broke after Katrina. The downstairs was submerged under water at that time. My husband, then single, poured his heart, sweat and time into rebuilding. This time we were lucky.
So many thoughts were running through my mind. As we pulled into the driveway, Sadie, my oldest daughter said,”The tree pooped all over our yard.” Laughter erupted in the car, breaking through the tension.
It is so easy to become overwhelmed in the midst of stress.
I learned a lot about myself, again, during our evacuation and the days leading up to it. I learned even more while waiting in the relentless Southern heat for our power to be restored. But through it all, the most valuable lesson I was reminded of time and time again, is that laughter really is the best medicine.
I tend to try different things, always learning what does and doesn’t work for me. I love the idea of exploring.
Except for when I don’t. Sometimes I need a no-brainer. A tried and true recipe or routine. A ritual.
My blueberry smoothie is my safety net. I don’t just love it. I need it. It is the perfect amount of protein yumminess for me as I make breakfasts and lunches for our busy life. It takes five minutes to make (and usually most of that time is clean up) and every time I drink it I am happy that I am taking care of myself so early in the day. It is the healthy launch pad I need to take on all that comes next. Enjoy!
